SAO PAULO | Brazil yearns for change but some say democracy at risk

SAO PAULO— A desire for radical change among many Brazilians after years of turmoil has fueled the rise of a far-right former army captain who supporters say will fight crime and corruption if elected president Sunday but who opponents warn threatens one of the world’s largest democracies.

Jair Bolsonaro has won over voters by painting a picture of a Brazil at war — with criminals, corrupt politicians and leftist ideas that he says could turn the country into Venezuela — and promises to change the tide with force and clean governance.
